CHAPTER 15

Sophie stood in front of the Avalon Park apartment building, holding Mac’s hand in a death grip. Ruby and Larry stood beside them, looking as tense as Sophie felt.

The building was shaped like a U with a courtyard in the center. It looked boxy and modern compared to the rest of the shaded, sleepy, tree-lined street. It appeared to be occupied mainly by college students based on the number of UNC-Chapel Hill hoodies they’d seen rushing in and out of the front gate.

Sophie watched as an oak tree shed its foliage onto the courtyard. The multi-colored leaves drifted in slow, lazy swirls before coming to rest on the brick-paved walkway.

“I think you should talk to her, Sophie,” Ruby announced.

“Me? No. You’re the friendly one,” Sophie argued.

“No. It has to be you. She’ll trust you. I tend to make people either uncomfortable or annoyed. If you’re the one to tell Emmie who and what she is, she’ll believe you. And if you tell her that we’ve got her back and will help her, she’ll know it’s true. You’re honest to a fault, and that shines through,” Ruby replied in a firm voice. “It has to be you.”

Larry pointed to a bench in a trellised alcove. “We’ll be right over there – ready to help if you need us.”

Larry tugged Ruby over to the seat before Sophie could formulate any additional arguments. She growled quietly under her breath as she watched them settle onto the bench and shoo her emphatically towards the stairs leading to Emmie’s apartment.

“I’m going to screw this up.” Despite thinking about it for almost the whole flight, Sophie hadn’t come up with what she should say to this new shard. How do you delicately upend someone’s entire life? She barely felt the brisk autumn wind blowing icy fingers across her cheeks as she stared at the door on the third floor that led to Emmie’s apartment.

Mac slung an arm around her waist, giving her a comforting squeeze. “This has to go better than when you and Ruby first met, right?”

Sophie snorted as the memory of Ruby jumping onto Alphonse’s back – the alpha wolf shifter trying to murder them both – while brandishing a syringe of poison popped into her head. “God, I hope so.”

Together they climbed the stairs to Emmie’s floor. Apartment 314 was several doors down from the stairs on the west arm of the building. When they stopped in front of the entrance to Emmie’s place, Sophie had to pause and take several slow breaths to calm her jittery nerves.

Finally, Sophie lifted her hand and gave the door three firm knocks.

“Hold on. I’m coming,” a woman’s voice that sounded eerily like Ruby’s called from the other side of the door. However, there was a softness to the tone that was absent from either Sophie’s or Ruby’s speech.

The door swung open a moment later, and there she was, standing in the opening. She looked exactly like Sophie and Ruby, except her black hair was cut into a bob that swung just below her chin.
